This was my first opportunity to photograph a performance (well, technically a dress rehearsal) put on by The Colorado Ballet. Their regular photographer was out of the country and, lucky me, got a call asking to fill in. The show took place at the Newman Center on the University of Denver’s campus. The assignment: Capture 3 compelling, high quality images of each dance and have them ready for the marketing department by mid morning next day. The show was approximately an hour long and by 7 pm I was wrapping things up. Over a thousand images, 2 cups of coffee and 6 hours latter I had it down to a final 12 images selected, retouched and ready to go.

My son, Jacob Taylor, is a teacher at Colorado Ballet and last week I had the wonderful opportunity to observe and photograph some of his classes. I had never seen him teach before and, I must say, I was most impressed with how he conducted his classes. His combination of technical expertise, clear and concise communication, attention and feedback to each and every student and his genuine love and caring of his students was beyond anything I could have ever imagined he would achieve. Bravo to you, my son.

I just got back from visiting my son in Bloomington, Indiana. He is a senior in The Jacob’s School of Music at IU and has been studying ballet there the last 4 years. He will be graduating soon and so this last performance was very special to me. I was incredibly proud of my son who persevered the ups and downs of the last 4 years to get to this point. I was incredibly happy to see him up there smiling and enjoying himself. I was also proud of all the other seniors that had started out with my son as freshmen and reached this level of accomplishment. I think a number of us parents feel this way – a sort of sentimental/surrogate attachment to all the children that made the same journey at the same time as our own child. OK – so without getting to sappy (I’m saving that for graduation) here are some of the moments from my trip.

What a show! Creative, inspiring, moving, sensual, thought provoking and entertaining. Thanks to the advice of my good friend and fellow photographer Dave Andrews, I was in row 2 with a 50mm for some nice close-ups.

I’ve been meaning to post some of these images for quite some time now. I finally found the time this morning and so here they are – a look behind the scenes from the 2012 BB Nutcracker Ballet. Performance and backstage pictures are still available for purchase through the end of the month (January 31).

Act II
One hundred years later in a dark forest, a Prince by the name of Florimund is hunting with his friends. He leaves his friends and insists on being alone. Lilac Fairy hears the commotion and ventures out to Prince Florimund. He tells her that he is lonely and is in need of love. She has the perfect idea. She presents an image of Princess Aurora to him and he instantly falls in love.
She leads him to the castle to rescue the beautiful Princess and put an end to the evil fairy, Carabosse. Lilac Fairy reveals the hidden castle to Prince Florimund. Just when Prince Florimund steps into the castle doorway, Carabosse appears before him. She will not let him pass and a battle quickly follows. Prince Florimund finally overpowers her and he races into the castle. Knowing the only way to break the spell, he quickly finds Princess Aurora and kisses her. The spell is broken and Carabosse is finally defeated. Princess Aurora and her entire family wake up from their deep sleep. Princess Aurora accepts Prince Florimund’s proposal for marriage and her family approves.
