**Understanding Pricing

Anyone can snap a picture, bring it to Target, Costco, or the local camera store and get it printed for about 19 cents. Printing costs, however, are only a minuscule portion of a custom photographer’s cost of doing business. Let’s take, for example, a typical 1 hour session. Here’s what you are really paying for when you hire a pro.

1.  The Photographer’s Time

  • phone calls, e-mails, pre and post session meetings and discussions – .5 to 2 hours
  • photographer’s session prep time – 1 hour (either preparing lighting, backgrounds and equipment in the studio or packing and loading equipment, driving to a location and setting up/breaking down equipment, unloading)
  • photographer’s shooting time – 1 hour
  • assistant’s time – 1 hour
  • post processing time – uploading images from memory cards to computer, culling, editing, cropping, retouching, enhancing, applying special affects, loading to online gallery – 2 to 4 hours
  • total time for a 1 hour session usually amounts to between 6 and 8 hours of a photographer’s time

2. Overhead

Each session has to cover a percentage of the overhead a photographer incurs in doing business.  Some of my overhead costs are:

  • Marketing and advertising
  • Utilities
  • Insurance
  • Clerical labor
  • Photography Assistant
  • Account/Legal Services
  • Office supplies
  • Equipment repairs
  • Cleaning
  • Website hosting
  • Licenses and professional fees
  • Ongoing education and training

3 . Equipment Investment

This includes cameras, lenses, filters, studio strobes, light stands, tripods, light modifiers, reflectors, backgrounds,  computers, monitors, memory cards, flash units, carrying and storage cases and other accessories.  Professional equipment provides excellent results  but is expensive. The financial investment a professional photographer makes in her equipment is huge but absolutely necessary. It is also an ongoing expense as equipment quickly becomes obsolete because technology advances so rapidly. My equipment is valued at somewhere around $30,000. Each year I budget to spend between $3,000 and $5,000 on new equipment.

4. The Photographer’s Education, Training and Experience.

5. The Photographer’s Artistry.

6. The Reliability, Dependability and Accountability of a professionally run business.
