And so, on my day off, messing with “macro” photography.
Definition: Macro photography is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects and living organisms like insects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is life size or greater.
It’s quite fun and, am thinking, maybe I will try this on portraiture.

Every once in awhile you have to take a break and just shoot for the joy of it. I’m so glad my friend suggested a walk in the zoo. So fun! And great practice. If you want to be a portrait photographer but you’re not quite ready to work with people, try shooting some faces at the zoo.

This time they are the real thing. My daughter and I happened upon a new store on Tennyson St. in Denver called “Denver Cat Company.” We were on our way to dinner when we passed the store and my daughter said “Look – there are cats in there. Can we go in?” I thought she meant there were 1 or 2 cats or maybe even toy cats. But, after we entered and passed through a security gate we actually found 8 cats sitting, snoozing, playing and socializing with each other and humans. What did we walk into? Actually, we entered Denver’s first official Cat Cafe. As per Denver Cat Company’s website a Cat Cafe “…features cats in residence, with visitors purchasing entry passes, usually for an hour, to enjoy the privilege of hanging out with the café cats. Beverages and snacks are also often on the menu, but there are no hard and fast rules besides the mission to provide kitty companionship to cat lovers.” The best part? If you fall in love with one of the kitties here they are all adoptable!

One thing you have to keep doing as a photographer is grow. Otherwise you risk becoming stale, old and boring. In order to grow and keep those creative juices flowing you have to immerse yourself in education, reach out to other photographers for inspiration and motivation and experiment with new ideas and concepts. This evening, ASMP (American Society of Media Professionals) held a seminar presenting award winning commercial photographer Nick Vedros. That was just the booster shot I needed. Nick had some really amazing images – rather different from the slew of images I’ve been bombarded with lately. He talked about some of the trick approaches to many of his shots and provided words of encouragement and inspiration that we all need to hear from time to time. Now I’m excited to embark on a new personal project – something fun and different. Just have to think of what that might be!

Thought I would try shooting something different this past Sunday. Went to the Wings Over The Rockies Air and Space Museum. It was a bit challenging for me because I am not very passionate about airplanes. But, I found that if I play with my camera a little and try stuff I usually don’t do during my regular work as a photographer I can have a lot of fun and maybe even learn a little. And, of course, eventually I was shooting the people who were shooting the inanimate objects so that made me happy.

I am happy to say that I have finally had a real vacation. Not that I have any complaints – my life is pretty darn good even without traveling around the world. But, the week in Puerto Vallerta was just what I needed to rejuvenate my spirit. It was a great vacation even if it wasn’t always sunny in Mexico.

One of the best parts of my day is when I am making dinner and my daughter is practicing piano. She plays so beautifully it makes me want to dance around the house. And, it gives me great joy and pleasure to see how her talent has grown over the years. It wasn’t always easy and there were a few times when I think she was very close to giving it up. But, I think mostly for my sake, she dutifully kept at it. I’m so happy she did. One of the best gifts you can give your child is an appreciation for music. It carries you through life, provides you companionship and an outlet for expression, and connects you with others in a very profound way. Thank you Zoe for returning the gift!
