Back to one of my favorite places on Earth – Nederland, Colorado for Paul and Velina’s wedding. And one of my favorite brunch places – The Sundance Cafe. Perched on a hill just above the town of Nederland and with great views of the mountains, this lovely couple pledged their wedding vows. Tears, smiles, balloon pops and cheers were all part of the occasion.

I was really happy, for many reasons, that I was hired by the Nederland High School theater department to shoot the head shots for this year’s spring musical. As an “ex-Nedhead”, it is always nice to go back and visit the town I had lived in and loved for 20 years. It’s also very special for me to get to work with the amazingly talented and dedicated theater director, Liz Evans. And finally, my son was an active theater participant and graduate of Nederland High School so I have a special place for that school in my heart. But I was especially pleased that the head shoots, this year, were in full Cats make-up and costume.

Well, this has been quite a week. I saw it happening on Facebook and on the news but I couldn’t believe my eyes. Up here secluded in Ned it looked like it was just raining a lot. Nothing out of the ordinary happening – you know, our usual power outages, cabin fever, roads rutting out. But down in Boulder a full fledged natural disaster was unfolding. What the heck was happening? We (us mountain people) were usually the ones who got zonked by Mother Nature. Now we were actually watching it happen to our friends and neighbors down the hill. And we couldn’t even lend a helping hand being trapped up here with virtually no escape because the canyon road was indefinitely closed. You think you have everything all planned out and then, pow, out of the blue something happens to shake your whole world. And you wonder – were all those little things I thought so important really that important?

Mackenzie wanted to get her senior portraits taken in Caribou. I loved the idea since it was something different and the stone buildings up there make for a great backdrop. She was a real trooper as it was very windy (as usual) and a little chilly. But the wind did great things to her hair and she seemed pretty immune to the cold. I, however, was a real wimp and wore layers and layers of clothing.

Maybe we’ll have some nice Halloween weather for the kids because our usual Halloween snow storm has arrived early this year (TODAY!) Not sure how many inches we got – maybe 8 to 10. I was out shoveling for about an hour along with my helper from next door – TJ. So now that my double black diamond driveway is clear I can sit back and enjoy the beautiful winter landscape. At least until the next storm hits which, I hope (sorry skier friends), isn’t for quite a while.

Meredith used to live down the street from me. She was only 5 or 6 years old when she first moved into “the neighborhood.” A very sweet and pretty little girl I remember seeing her playing with the other kids. Her family moved down to Boulder a few years ago and I haven’t seen her since. Except today when I took her senior portraits. I couldn’t believe all that time had passed and she was already graduating from high school. And, she reminded me, how much the kids liked playing on “Jacob’s Rock” (named after my son Jacob). I had almost forgotten about that. It was nice to reconnect to all those memories.

I shot this wedding in August. When I got the call there was no time to waste. Lisa and Stuart decided to get married in 2 weeks! Lisa’s mom wanted her to have a professional photographer at her wedding and so they called me. “Can you do it? It’s only weeks away.” Fortunately, I was free and I always love shooting mountain weddings. “Yes – I’m game.” The ceremony started just as the sun was going down. Here’s a glimpse of their wedding.

This past weekend was Homecoming and I had the opportunity to be at Nederland High School’s Homecoming Dance. There used to be a time, not too long ago, when I knew most of the kids from the high school. My son, Jacob, went through the school system here and by the time he got to high school I not only knew the kids but the parents as well. When I showed up to photograph the dance this year, there were only a handful of students I recognized. Making me feel, well, a little sad. But time does go by and we all move on. I suppose that’s why I take pictures!
